I think a lot of it comes down to not many people of color designing games. If there's one thing white people are scared of it's being called racist. As a result, they're too shy to broach the subject of race with a 10ft pole. Thus, they stick to what they know, which is making more games about white people. I mean if a white person makes a game about characters of a different culture any slight misstep could get them labelled as racist or fetishizing another culture. It's a tough line t...
I kinda loathe the art style to this game and it look too complex for my feeble mind to learn how to play, but I have been tempted to pick this game up solely for the dialogue. Hopefully Mass Effect 2 will put this Bioware magic to a genre I can get into a bit more.
I've heard so many good things about this game, but the bad things just sound so bad that they'd likely ruin it for me. Would like to give it a shot at some point though.
I'd consider it a gun. Just wouldn't consider Portal an FPS.
This isn't the first time an RTS hybrid has gotten such baffling reception. Anyone remember Odoma or Endwar?
I want it now as well. But where will it take place?
I do like the intro paragraph quite a bit.
Anyone else surprised when they heard that you don't actually play as Gay Tony? Color me disappointed. Still a step in the right direction, though.
Good call. I'd nearly forgotten about that. Maybe because there were so many sim-like elements in that game that it didn't stick out as much. In Blob it was the only one and the game was otherwise very simple.
I don't think Persona is so much of a spinoff as it is a completely separate universe that deals with similar themes. I mean there's no real connection between games beyond the use of many of the same demons and the name. By that standard, every Final Fantasy is a spin-off.
Really interesting read, though I'm not sure I'd call God of War accurate or even close. I really need to play this Path game. (Crosses fingers for an XBLA or PSN port).
Ya know, now that I think on it, this has been a fantastic year for voice-acting on the whole. Recently we've had this, Brutal Legend, and Uncharted 2- any of which have some of the best voice-acting the medium has ever seen. One sticking point with Arkham, however; Gordon sucks. I realize the guy who played him on the animated series is retired, but I was hoping they could have found a better match. Thankfully, he's not in it much.
For the most part, I believe this is one of Joe's best articles and it does a great job of explaining just what makes Uncharted 2's dialogue so special. One sticking point, however...
In the most recent PoP, you had to stop to talk in a cutscene. They were optional cutscenes, but cutscenes nonetheless. I believe he meant PoP: Sands of Time where the dialogue went on during the platforming.
Not a big figurine collector myself, but this looks rad.
I have to admit that I had little interest in this game based solely on its cliched aesthetic, but the actual game behind it sounds really intriguing. Could well be a big action-RPG surprise ala Demon's Souls.
Solid list, though I would have added Letz Shake's hilariously anticlimactic demise in No More Heroes.
Perhaps it was my curbed expectations, but I found myself constantly pleasantly surprised by most everything in this game.
I never did understand the hype behind KZ2 myself. Good graphics, but bland as all hell. As such, I have no excitement for KZ3 whatsoever.
I know a lot of people are excited about Borderlands, but I can't for the life of me muster up any excitement for the game whatsoever. Looks like too much of a grindfest for my tastes. Still, I feel like they've tapped into a good market by making what basically amounts to an MMO shooter. Surprised no one did it earlier.
I'm playing AC2 now actually and feel like it's an extremely conventional game. It's addictive as all hell, but achieves it through tried-and-true game design based on leveling up, collecting stuff, and going on the same few kinds of side quests. I know it sounds cliche, but the game's template really is GTA in Renaissance Italy. Not that that's a bad thing. Just not very convention breaking.
